Team Gates Carbon Drive kicked off the Colorado cyclocross season in Colorado Springs by taking the top two podium spots at the Pikes Peak Velo Campus Cross Race.
The Pikes Peak Velo gang invited everyone down to a great new course in the shadow of Pike’s Peak last weekend. The course was a great way to break into the season, with lots of variety including a nice mix of climbing and technical sections, sand and a staircase. The start was great for me, situated right at the base of the long paved climb, and I was able to jump to the front. Checking to see that teamate Taylor Jung was on my wheel, I jumped hard again just before heading into the first technical section, and quickly we strung the race out. The first race of the year can always make for some doubts, but since the legs were responding well, I was able to open a gap, and hoped that it would be enough to hold the fast-charging guys behind.
I was having a great first race of the season, and with a decent gap was able to focus on being smooth and turning laps as consistently as possible, taking the win with a comfortable margin! Taylor was battling back and forth for second place, until he was finally able to put in a solid attack and make a gap of his own to hold second place for the final few laps. He was having a smooth race once he was up into second, but on the final lap, the third place rider was coming har. With a great run through the final barrier section though, and the solid engagement of his Gates Carbon Drive belt, Taylor was able to make a clean sprint to the line, securing the top two positions for Gates.
It was great to be back on my favorite Hodala bike from Raleigh, and all our same great sponsors are back once again to support the full team as we work towards the goal of taking both the team and rider Colorado Cyclocross Cups again this year!
