The Tern HSD: a Mighty Mini Electric Cargo Bike

  July 10, 2019

"Enormously useful. Surprisingly smaller." That's how Tern describes its new HSD electric cargo bike, part of a new breed of practical car-replacing eBikes that are redefining what a bicycle can do.

A revolution in bicycle design is underway as bike makers create new models designed for practical and sustainable living, and as consumers replace car trips with pedal power to avoid urban traffic, improve their health and save money. Tern’s HSD is a state-of-the art example of this trend. Nimble and easy to ride yet built to carry heavy loads, its compact design combines the best attributes of a small-wheel folding bike with a cargo bike. The HSD is just 170 cm long, or about five-and-a-half feet, making it easy to bring indoors, where it can be parked vertically. The clean and powerful drivetrain consisting of a Bosch motor and Gates Carbon Drive belt mean the HSD can power up hills fully loaded with virtually no maintenance.

Tern offers three HSD models with Gates belts, with a variety of leading internally geared hub shifting systems. The media is raving. Electrek says the HSD offers “nimbleness rarely seen in a cargo e-bike.” New Atlas says the HSD “wants to put your car out of a job.” Treehugger.com says it could be “the future of urban transportation.”
